Meant to say I'm betting early retirement or Japan Ambassador...but would love to see a Dem beat him straight up too.

CBS 2 reporting he will announce intention not to seek re-election.

As usual, it's attributed to 'sources'...

If I were to bet on this, I would say Denny is going to RUN.  The rebublicans won't take a chance on losing to a Democrat.  If he runs, he will have a very difficult race (I personnally think a democrat can beat him).

I believe that Denny is so arrogant that he believes he can't lose and intends to pick his replacement AFTER the election when he will retire.  By doing so, he will cheat the voters out of the opportunity to ELECT their representative.

This will prove interesting!

Let's try to track what the 'sources' are leaking to the press...

AP  - Retire at the end of the term

Reuters - Retire, but not clear if immediately, or end of term

CBS 2 Chicago - Retire at end of term

CQPolitics.com - Retire at end of term

Novak - Retire at end of term or now, not clear

I just love when sources indicate to the reporter that: "The officials who discussed his plans did so on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt a public announcement."   Lines like that in a story pre-empting the annoucement provide a dose of joyful irony to political junkies like me.

the Sun Times reported this morning that Hastert is DEFINATELY going to announce his retirement - didn't say when that would be effective. They did report about Lauzen and whoever the repub mayor form Sugar Grove (or wherever) this are planning to run for the repub nomination. Good thing I'm not a "betting man",.....

OK, everyone is citing everyone else now...but still all 'sources.'

Some say end of term, others are less specific.  300+ hits in Google News.

I suppose we can all wait 48 hours for his grand annoucement .  Then we call all get back to work getting Democrats elected, particularly to the seat he currently occupies.

Funny stuff...WSJ speaking of Hastert in past tense.

Did you know that he is secretly working with Pelosi on demanding new energy legislation that lobbying orgaizations like NAM hate?  Me either...If it's true, good for him.  It would be a nice change.

It's official...he gives interview to Trib announcing his retirement, someday.

I'll let his snarky parting shots pass for now, but suffice it to say he did give a graceful exit interview.

Talk about arrogant - Hastert staffers placed Hastert signs in my sister's yard without permission on Fri. 8/17 for his big announcement. She lives near the courthouse and as usual, Hastert's office thinks they own Kendall County so they felt free to place the signs in her yard and leave them there. She is NOT a Hastert supporter and was NOT pleased.
