Citizens of Kendall County - our County Board will soon be voting on landfill applications.  Please call or email them today to voice your opposition (630-553-4171 or kcadmin@co.kendall.il.us).  This is the message I sent:
To the Kendall County Board,
I urge the board to consider all options and alternatives to landfills in Kendall County.  Please do not ignore all the evidence that there is a superior and safer method to handle solid waste, Plasma Arc Technology.  Please consider the recommendation of the Kendall County Solid Waste Consultant and so many Kendall County residents and vote NO on landfills in Kendall County.  Only a NO vote will be a vote for the general well being of Kendall County residents.  If the board votes YES, future residents will look back and wonder how the board could have voted in such inferior and unsafe technology when alternatives were available and already widely in use at the time and the board knew about it.  Please demonstrate that Kendall County favors responsible progress and up-to-date technology and puts the health and welfare of its citizens first.  The citizens of Kendall County will appreciate your careful consideration.
Thank you,
Kelly Pfarrer

This is not just my opinion this represents the participants and attorneys who attended the WMX/KLC landfill hearing....

I have to tell you I was in disbelief with the way Blazer conducted himself for these landfill hearings for this second application beginning with the first night of the hearings on September 11.

Unnamed attorneys told me on day one that Blazer would approve WMX/KLC application so he would be guaranteed more business from WMX and the rest of his clients in Chicago...We are lucky Kinnally was there to expose Blazer's lack of representation for the people...

As a participant in KC’s landfill siting process Blazer did almost nothing to question the evidence presented by Waste Management witnesses and he ridiculed those who challenged what was being proposed by the applicants. Although Blazer works for KC, he does not want to tick off Waste Management. Attorney Blazer did not present any expert witnesses on behalf our county in this hearing. Why not? Was the decision already made? In the closing remarks of his recommendation to the Kendall County Board, Blazer again belittles the people who made comments he didn't like to hear. Blazer's actions and inaction during this year's hearings indicate to me that he represents Kendall Land and Cattle and Waste Management. The public health, environment, and opinion of Kendall County citizens do not seem to be his priority.

Several County Board Members were just filling their seats. When participants were speaking they got up and went into the kitchen, one even laughed when I could not get the computer or projector to work properly to show the DVD on alternative technologies. We have KC board member/candidate taking money from the landfill applicants, KC board member entertaining the Landfill attorney at her home.

Some people joke the Golden Rule is "He who has the gold makes the rules," but life and work are much better for all when we live by the original:

Do to others what you want them to do to you.

When you follow the Golden Rule and live with integrity, you set an example that has a far greater impact than any words you could ever speak. It sounds simple, but it's absolutely true. And it applies to so many areas of leadership... character and integrity create trust and respect which is the foundation for leadership. Imagine what the world would be like if all present day leaders of nations had that kind of integrity. What if we could depend on their word in any situation? What if trust and confidence were the foundation of every business relationship?

True leaders demonstrate Integrity by Example

THE COMMON GOOD....The common good is a notion that originated over two thousand years ago in the writings of Aristotle, defined the common good as "certain general conditions that are...equally to everyone's advantage".

Please use your common sense and go with well respected attorneys Dan Kramer and hearing officer Patrick Kinnally's advice and vote NO on burying garbage in a L/F in KC.

The definition of COMMON SENSE... The ability to make sensible decisions: judgment, sense, wisdom.

Antonyms: foolishness, impracticality, insanity, unreasonableness

Do what is right for this county and country and move forward into 21st century technology NOW.

Many other countries are moving forward and leaving us in the dust while they watch us self destruct, pollute, destroy, and bankrupt our own country.

Thanks

POWER is working to rid our country of toxic landfills and to supplant the age old practice of burying garbage with the new waste to energy technologies. Through the employment of the new technologies, this country can permanently free itself from dependence on foreign oil and make toxic landfills a thing of the past. Landfills are the largest manmade source of methane gas emissions, roughly 8% of greenhouse gases. Here are just a few of the high tech alternatives to landfills that could be built in any industrial park in the Kankakee area.

1) Bio-fuels: Agresti Biofuels, Inc., Indianapolis, Ind. www.agrestibiofuels.com. AgrestiBiofuels is organized to process Municipal Solid Waste or other specific cellulosic feed stock material into saleable materials including ethanol utilizing the “Titmas method.” A variety of wastes can be used as-received, then sorted and recycled, and processed. They are building a plant in Pike County, Kentucky.

2) Bio-fuels: CleanTech Biofuels, Inc., St. Louis, Mo. www.cleantechbiofuels.net. They have licensed and developed a group of technologies that used together can process municipal garbage into usable energy products. They are building a plant in Chicago at a site of a garbage transfer station. The cellulosic biomass to be produced at the facility can be used for a variety of purposes, including producing electricity in existing coal-burning power plants. CleanTech has been approached by several utilities who desire to purchase the biomass from the Chicago plant for use in existing power plants.

3) Bio-fuels: Power Energy One, formerly Genahol-Powers 1, Evansville, Ind. www.genahol.com/benefits.htm Power Energy One represents a new and exciting concept in solid waste management called conversion technology. Power Energy One converts the biomass and carbonic portions of the solid waste stream into renewable energy and other bio-products. They are building a plant in Lake County, Indiana.

4) Ethanol: Coskata, Inc., headquartered in Warrenville, IL. www.coskata.com. GM owns a significant share of this company. They convert municipal solid waste into ethanol. Gasification is combined with fermentation and separation to convert waste to ethanol for about a dollar per gallon. They are building a plant in Madison, Pa.

5) Plasma Arc Gasification: Geoplasma, LLC. (Jacoby Group) www.geoplasma.com. They are building a 3000 ton per day garbage processor which evaporates loads of garbage in 5 seconds in St. Lucie County, Fla. Output is electricity and building materials.

6) Thermal Depolymerization: Changing World Technologies, headquartered in Long Island, New York. www.changingworldtech.com. They use garbage to produce oil. Any carbon based product may be converted. It is estimated that 700 million tons of garbage will produce 4 billion barrels of oil annually. It converts waste products to oil in three hours using a process that takes nature hundreds of thousands of years to accomplish. They were featured in articles in Discovery Magazine, May of 03, Money Magazine June of 04 and they were a subject on CBS Evening News, Aug. 03. They have a plant in operation in Carthage, Mo.

Here is a Q & A on Plasma Arc Technology
1) Why should I consider Plasma Arc Technology and why now?
Municipal Solid Waste is a pressing environmental problem. In 2003, alone, the EPA reported that US residents businesses an institutions produced more than 236 million tons of Municipal Solid Waste. If you live in a county with expected population and business growth it is important to evaluate ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY and ECONOMICALLY viable options to dispose of the vast amounts of waste generated. Plasma gasification provides a sustainable solution with a strong track record allowing counties to take care of today's waste disposal needs and prepare for continued growth.
2) Where else has this kind of technology been used?
3 facilities in Japan have been in operation for more than 5 years. GM plant in Ohio since June 1989
3) How long does it take to design and build the plant?
It takes approximately 26 months to design and build the facility.
4) Will emissions from plasma arc technology harm the environment?
Geoplasma systems are designed to comply with ALL environmental permitting and operating regulations.
5) What kind of emissions does a plasma gasification facility produce?
Each system will be designed and fine tune to comply with all environmental regulations. Different types of waste and various processes for energy recovery and conversion produce different emissions data, so Geoplasma works with the garbage owner to characterize the types of waste that will be gasified in the facility.
6) What does the EPA say about using Plasma Arc technology for the destruction of waste?
The EPA has reported that municipal waste and animal waste can be used to produce energy and hydrogen for fuel cells in an environmentally friendly manner. The council has also identified plasma arc as a way for municipalities to SAFELY dispose of waste while generating revenue from energy production.
7) Will the current odors coming out of the landfill be alleviated with this new facility?
The plasma facility operates under negative air pressure meaning that the materials causing the odor go into the plant and processed. The negative air pressure prevents the odor from being released.
8) Health and Safety...What are the safety risks associated with operating the Plasma Arc and with processing the fuel?
There have been no worker or safety issues associated with the production and fuel gases.
9) Are there health risks to the neighbors by having a Plasma Arc facility in close proximity?
This is a low emission process with all emissions being WELL below standards meeting all state and federal emission limits.
10) What is the estimated cost for local residents?
There is NO cost to any municipality and its residents beyond the tipping fees they already pay.
11) Who finances this project?
Geoplasma, LLC and its finance team members, New Prospect Capital and UBS, finance 100% of the project.
12) Is plasma arc technology cost effective?
A Geoplasma arc facility will provide waste destruction in an environmentally sound manner and economically viable manner. Geoplasma LLC finances 100% of proposed projects including construction and operation of the facility.
13) Who will work at the facility? Will Geoplasma import their own labor or will they use local subcontractors and laborers?
A Geoplasma plant will create 80 to 100 new jobs with an annual payroll of 5 million for residents and others whose skills and experience can be applied to this facility. Geoplasma will do its best to use local contractors and laborers to fill the jobs during construction and later operation. As an equal opportunity employer, Geoplasma will hire those who have the skills, education, and experience that best fit the positions available. Geoplasma is partnering with Westinghouse Plasma Corp. to provide the plasma heating element. Georgia Tec. research institute, which does plasma arc technology research, is providing technical oversight on Geoplasma projects. Mactec engineering and consulting inc. is the engineering and environmental consultant.
Plasma Gasification is proven technology, it's not experimental

You will find many people will say new technologies plasma arc/ are years off... and don’t give it a second thought...This is a BLATANT assault on the FACTS and an invasion across the U.S. in many political areas... whether it be bureaucracy/ or the big bucks, or they just don’t feel like changing what they are doing.
It’s easy for WMX to say something is too expensive, if they are comparing it to a hole in the ground and leaving out the critical factors of a POISONING TOXIC TOMB.
What’s cheaper than throwing things into a hole in the ground? The problem is that you still have a problem with the waste, and they are potentially throwing away millions of dollars in energy from that waste that could be recovered, and of course, also creating a HUGE environmental problem in the future. Eventually that dump will have to be either built higher or people will have to start paying even more to ship their waste somewhere else. Eventually the cost of taking care of waste will keep getting bigger and bigger at our Kendall County residents expense....Let's stop the destruction of our planet now...and rely on the facts.

Chrisi - On 11/20 the county board voted 6-4 against approval of the landfill application. I understand that Waste Management is still trying to push the landfill application through and certain county board members may be cooperating. Will there be another vote? What is the status? Thank you!

Kendall County Board voted down a landfill proposal, now the Kendall Land and Cattle (local profiteers) involved are urging the board to reverse its decision. How could they do that$$$$$
Waste Management (WMX) and Kendall Land and Cattle LLC (KLC) filed a motion to reverse disapproval of application with the county clerk's office on Monday 11/24.

The eight-page document attempts to prove that WMX met all of the criteria set by the board, despite the contradictory opinion of hearing officer Patrick Kinnally.

Weis said the board's pollution control facility siting ordinance "specifically states the decision of the County Board is a final decision and is not subject to a motion to reconsider."

Weis said Waste Management still has 35 days from the night the vote was taken to appeal the decision with the Illinois Pollution Control Board.

County board member Anne Vickery, stated we have not heard the last of WMX/KLC...how would she know that????

Although I legally think the issue at the County level should be dead, it is important to have the citizen interest and pressure kept on the County Board so they don’t get suck into local corruption under pressure from Waste Management.
