The ONLY way the auto industry should receive any type of a financial help from the government...we the people's tax dollars..$$$$$$$...
The funds, bail out... will ONLY go towards production GREEN CARS...ABSOLUTELY NO FOSSIL FUEL...starting now...day one of the bail out...not one cent towards out dated dinosaur technology...
2003 GM produced 100% of all new cars for Brazil that run on sugarcane...flex fuel cars...
The auto industry is in bed with the fossil fuel oil companies...HELLO...the technology is, was available years ago...NOW...TODAY!
The cycle of addiction must end now - and it's our generation that must stand up and make the change!

Burn baby burn, spill baby spill, melt baby melt...

The U.S. burns 25 percent of the world's oil, but we only have three percent of the world's proven oil reserves. Offshore drilling won't even deliver a drop of oil for ten years, according to the Bush Administration's own numbers. That means we'll never be able to drill our way to lower gas prices or energy independence.
Drilling for offshore oil is like giving an addict a bigger dose - it doesn't solve the problem, it just makes it worse - for all of us.
Chanting "drill, baby, drill" is like a drug dealer saying, "come on, it'll make you feel good."  It's being sold as a temporary fix, but the effects on the planet's health will last more than a lifetime.
The technology is available today for alternative fuel vehicles and a comprehensive green infrastructure. We must demand our local, state and federal politicians to implement this right now. We must also do our part right here in Kendall County!

$25 billion could fund the conversion of the current US automobile production line to CNG (compressed natural gas) similar to the Honda GX. http://automobiles.honda.com/civic-gx/refueling.aspx . The bailout money should also be used to convert 18 wheelers to CNG as quickly as possible.

No need to completely retool basic car design and will be very cost effective. Part of the bail out should include the home refueling station with each new CNG car purchase. We would quickly reduce foreign oil imports and still drive our SUV's burning fuel that is plentiful in the US and very clean.

The bail out plan must require the car maker's senior management to resign in order to succeed. The present management are not motivated to change. -BV

Wow Chrisi, You've been busy. I used to post comments here once in a while - but I got tired of talking to myself. I would LOVE to revive this discussion board. Hopefully more people are interested in participating.

In response to this post - I'll agree with you about compressed natural gas - it's plentiful, local, and clean (well, cleaner anyway). I'm a little less enthusiastic about cellulose based bio-feuls (ethanol from corn or sugar). I wonder about the wisdom of having our energy supply compete directly with our food supply. Every acre of land we use to grow fuel is one less acre that can feed us - And how much more de-forestation will occur if people begin slashing forests to grow fuel? I guess it's better than slashing forests to grow cocaine, but still ...

As far as bailouts go - I don't mind the gov't ponying up my money if that's what they gotta do - but I want them to have an equity stake in these companies. When the taxpayers own a piece, we can sell it later and recover some of that investment. It also gives us leverage to take these companies in a direction we need them to go.

I am not crazy about tax $ bailing out failing businesses, but wouldn't it be great if the US were once again leades in the industry and producing green autos???!!! Agree that taxpayers should get a piece of ownership and companies should be required to go in the responsible direction.
