Here is a couple links describing the quiet changes Bush made to the "Insurrection Act" in the 2007 Defense Authorization Bill.  We all must TELL/DEMAND (email) Congress To Repeal!  Here is the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insurrection_Act

Here is a good article futher describing the new outragoues powers that were given to Bush through this legislation!

http://signs-of-the-times.org/signs/editorials/signs20061027_BushMovesTowardMartialLaw.php

These changes give him new, unwarranted powers to comandeer our National Guard troops against our Governor's will, and send them to be used (illegally) as police against another state (i.e. Ohio etc... and visa versa) for any reason he wants!  For instance, our troops (National Guard) could be authorized to shoot-to-kill citizens in another state demonstrating; disputed election results; the occupation of Iraq etc...!  Please write your Congressman and demand action against these changes!  Tom

Well, I guess its a good thing we have a Democratic Congress then...

Leahy and others can now control legislation and provide oversight whereas before we could only must wordy criticism.

There has been a lot of legislation enacted that I don't like including parts of the Patriot Act to name just one. Nevertheless, I feel a whole lot better now that we got some balance to our government and particularly a counter balance to President Bush.

Man, who has the time and energy to write Wiki's like that? Stunning...

First link is certainly worth the read. Gives both criticism and rebuttal - and both are reasonable. I'm not sure I would object to this change in law - if it stood by itself. It would clearly enhance the Federal government's ability to respond to disasters. But given all the consolidation of power in the executive branch recently, this is something to be concerned about.

Communist China used the same technique (now available to Bush) against peaceful demonstrators at the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989.

They used troops from outside the area to kill 2000-3000 students and scholars, who the local police and Army units had supported!

Our National Guard wisely, could (previously) only in rare instances be used outside our state, never as police, and then only with our Governor's consent!

Be sure to email your Senators and Rep. in Washington to voice your concern about this new unwarranted power that Bush, and future President's (Jeb ha-ha) can now wield!

I'd be uncomfortable w/these changes in any admin., but considering the Bush Admin/FBI's practice of spying on non-violent, known, peace activists, the NSA stuff, etc., I'm REALLY uncomfortable! Hopefully the Dem Congress will step up.
